Forest of Dean Parkrun – Saturday 22nd September 2012

There is an old military adage known as the 6Ps: Proper planning prevents p*** poor performance.

This was amply demonstrated when a number of Ashton Court regulars set off to the Forest of Dean as an alternative to attending the BrisFest at Ashton Court. Meeting times were distributed; a route was worked out; vehicles were sorted; some (but not all) fuelled up; a free parking area in Bristol was secured; emails were distributed; everyone knew what the plan was. Then on Friday night, Twitter and Facebook went into overdrive. The “powers that be” had decided to shut the old Severn Bridge from 6am on Saturday morning for maintenance works. Fortunately, the detour via the new bridge only added 15 minutes and this could be accommodated.

Having gone through the results, the best estimate is that 13 Bristol and West Parkruners made it to the Forest of Dean, a number which assisted in achieving a new record turnout of 120.

The Forest of Dean is certainly a different course. It is entirely on woodland tracks over an extremely complicated 2 lap circuit. Some of the GPSs must have almost burnt out trying to accommodate the numerous changes of direction.  On a wet day, parts of it would be like a bog. Overtaking is difficult due to the narrow tracks. It’s certainly a course for the more agile.

A big thank you to all at The Forest of Dean for making us so welcome. Discussions have taken place as to where the next “away day” will be. Final decisions are still to be made.

Results are as detailed below. Apologies if anyone has been missed out.
