Ashton Court Parkrun – Saturday 18th August 2012

After a one week absence, due to the Balloon Festival, Parkrun returned to Ashton Court on Saturday 18th August 2012. This week, the event was part of the “Join in Local Sport” campaign, an initiative to encourage more participation in grass roots sport and appropriately positioned between those two major events, the end of the Olympics and the start of “X Factor”.

Saturday’s run did feature something that we did not see five minutes before the start of any Olympic competition – a full blown marriage proposal on bended knee, in front of all present.

Congratulations to Alan Wilcox from the Hogweed Trotters and his fiancée Sheila from all at Bristol and West.

This extra-curricular event attracted a record number of 221 parkrunners plus volunteers and spectators, beating the previous best of 217 on 28th April 2012. There were 20 runners from Bristol & West, 6 of whom got PBs. The runners who got the PBs have one thing in common. Can you spot what it is ladies?

Could it have been anything to do with the pre-run events that got the blokes legging it up that hill rather smartly. Now there’s the clue.

The Performance of the Week goes to Rikki Porter who beat his previous best time by 72 seconds. Other significant improvements were achieved by Noel Arthur and Stephen Blakeney. The word is that Rikki and Noel have been spotted practising hills this week. If so it is definitely paying off.

Roger was asked why there was no Performance of the Week award for last week’s Parkrun at Southwick Park. The official reason is that it is impossible to judge individual’s performances on their first outing on a course………………………The real reason is that he forgot!

Julia Belyavin volunteered today, marshalling halfway up the first hill, ably assisted as always, at that position by Chris Elson, with Carron Downer on his comeback outing after injury, on the camera.
