Trip to Southwick Parkrun – Saturday18th August 2012

A report on “the other 5k” on Saturday 18th August 2012

As Ashton Court Parkrun was cancelled due to the Balloon Fiesta, club members needing their Saturday morning “fix” set off to the Southwick Country Parkrun near Trowbridge to sample a different run.

The course is on a 1,868 metre circuit and participants run 2⅔ laps anti-clockwise, reaching the finish line on a fast downhill stretch near the tea room and the car park. The surface is predominantly compacted hard-core with a fair amount of loose material. Topographically, there are a couple of steady uphills followed by downhills on each lap. Undulating is, Roger believes, the technical term.

After analysing the results, Roger reckons that 34 parkrunners attended from Ashton Court, with 16 being Bristol and West members, together with Colin Traer and Robin Dallman, who despite precise instructions, GPSs and maps, seem to have got lost and ended up at Eastleigh and St Albans respectively!

Keith Brackstone was also there. If this was horse racing, Roger would describe him as a travelling head lad. He was coaching, cajoling, taking photos (probably bad ones!) and insisting on a proper warm down – generally whipping everyone into shape.

There were a total of 94 runners at Southwick; not a record, but well above the average attendance of 71. Highlights were Sarah Everitt finishing as first lady in 20:59. Pete Mountain, Gary Jennings, Tracy Allen and Alison Engledew filled the first four positions in the Age Grade Rankings with Pete getting 80.45%, the only runner above 80%. Generally the results were quicker than Ashton Court.

Of the “resolution runners”, Vanessa Redmond achieved her target of less than 30 minutes, with a time of 29:50. Does it count? Or has it to be achieved at Ashton Court? Over to the Ashton Court adjudicators.

Finally, a big thank you to all at Southwick Country Park. We were warmly welcomed, the organisation was terrific, loads of friendly and encouraging marshals, a nice downhill finishing straight, followed by a first class café. What more do you want on a Saturday morning? and the sun was shining as well!
