British Milers Club Grand Prix – Solihull – Saturday 21st July 2012

Eight members of Bristol & West Athletic Club competed in the British Miler’s Club Grand Prix Meeting at Solihull on Saturday 21st July 2012 and four of them took advantage of the favourable conditions (was it for the first time this year?!) to record PBs.

In the 1,500 metres ‘A’ race Steve MITCHELL emerged from a prolonged period of indifferent form to shave two hundredths of a second off his PB – but going in to the race he would have been happy for any kind of half decent performance. Starting towards the back of the field he passed 400 metres in 59 seconds, 800 metres in just under 2 minutes, 1,200 in 2:58.65 and finished seventh in 3:41.90. At one stage looked as if Steve might get up to second in a very close finish that saw Andy Baddeley only half a second in front. In the same race where the pacemaker was asked to go through in 58 seconds Mike WILSMORE was caught out when the leaders went through in 56 seconds and Mike’s run showed just how critical such things can be as he finished 15th in 3:47.19. Mike definitely has a 3:42 in him but will now need to wait to find the right race.

The Men’s 1,500 metres ‘B’ race saw two club PBs as Dan STUDLEY showed his recent 3:46 was no one off as he finished eighth in 3:46.79 to shave .18 of a second off his PB. Always in the mix throughout Dan must be really happy to show a consistency at this level of performance. Andrew WOODS was up-graded from the ‘D’ race to the ‘B’ race on hopes of running close to 3:45 but in only his second 1,500 metres race of the season he realised just how tough 1,500 metre running is at that level but was rewarded for sticking with it as a 3:50.89 clocking took 3 seconds off his PB – he will come back stronger for the experience.

In the ‘F’ race Will CHRISTOFI went close to his PB with a time of 4:00.95 and it must surely be just a matter of time before he breaks through the 4 minute barrier.

In the 800 metre races Molly LONG made the long journey from Cornwall worthwhile as she ran a very mature race in the Women’s ‘C’ race and finished strongly to record a PB of 2:09.44. At 15 years old this must place her well up the age group rankings.

Another to be rewarded for his long journey (this time from North Devon) was Shaun ANTELL who finished eleventh in the ‘C’ 5,000 metres in a new PB of 15:06.3 – well done Shaun.

Last – but by no means least – was Dave BISHOP who recorded 1:51.19 for third place in the Men’s 800 metres ‘C’ race.
