Near Clean Sweep in Clevedon 10k – Tuesday 12th June 2012

15 Jun

Our runners dominated Clevedon’s popular Midsummer 10K which was run in near perfect conditions. Owain Jones and Steve McGuigan finished first and second overall, while Nikki Brookland was only just out sprinted in the women’s event by newcomer Flo Danna, with Jenny Jagger a good third. To complete a successful evening fine back-up from Tom Morris and Mike Jacobs ensured our men took the team title, with Sarah Everitt’s support confirming victory too for the ladies.

Owain, having only his second serious race following the Bristol 10K after more than a year battling with chronic achilles tendonitis, was a clear winner by more than half a minute and happy to dip under 32 minutes (31:54), and even happier perhaps to finish apparently unscathed. As for Steve he was shocked to finish only half a minute or so outside his PB in 32:33 as he has been existing this year on nothing more than 25 miles a week due to the birth of his new offspring. Behind our leading pair Tom Morris proved what an asset he is going to be to the men’s team in 7th place with yet another personal best of 33:46, while Mike Jacobs yet again proved himself the outstanding V45 in 34.13.

Nikki Brookland was disappointed to get overhauled in the closing stages by the talented Flo Danna – what a cracking run she had for a comparative novice, clocking a time of 36:16 – and was disappointed not to match her sub-35 min time in the recent Hogweed 10K, but was clearly still feeling the effects of her winning run in Sunday’s Chippenham 5M road race so should not be too surprised or downhearted! Jenny Jagger (36:40 unofficially) was not far outside her PB and finished just behind Gareth Cullen, who was another of Chris Elson’s training group to set a new best for the distance by 20 secs in 36.41. A whole raft of PBs followed with Colin Traer 38.08, Gary Jennings 40.01, Sarah Everitt, first W45 in 40.52, Carron Downer, 2nd M60 in 41.13 and Roger Brockelsby 49.13.
