Bristol & West Athletic Club returned to British Athletic League Competition with a win at a very sunny Derby Moorways Stadium on Sunday 27th May 2012. After a fairly slow start to the competition the club gradually pulled up from fifth (of six) early on; late in the day the club had moved to third place 11 points behind the meeting leaders and were still second five points behind the leaders with just the relays to go. Cue the need for a good safe 4 x 100 metres relay – despite this the team set out with a show that was not for the faint hearted and only when three white flags were raised were the club spectators happy that they hadn’t pushed it too far as Scott BAJERE cruised home in 41.28 for a clear win and a new club record – the other team members were Kwame FORDWOR, Theo CAMPBELL and Omar SIMPSON. Well done guys – a great display of sprinting and baton changing.
Later when the full results arrived it transpired that the team had won by 28 points so perhaps there was no need to have worried after all.
The first track event of the afternoon was the 400 metres hurdles where John BRIERLY clocked 58.17 when finishing fifth in the ‘A’ race and James TREZONA ran 62.88 for fourth in the ‘B’ race.
Steve MITCHELL third in the ‘A’ race in 1:54.96 and Dan STUDLEY second in the ‘B’ race in 1:57.53 scored good points in the 800 metres.
The sprinters had a great afternoon and although Omar SIMPSON false started in the ‘B’ 100 metres the ‘A’ race was clearly won by Theo CAMPBELL in 10.60. The usual hours on the phone for a team manager meant that Cy Knibb had covered every event except for the 3,000 metres ‘B’ string; Charlie Maclean won the race comfortably in 9:12 to take the ‘A’ string.
In the 110 metres hurdles John BRIERLY finished sixth in 18.00 and James TREZONA was fifth in the ‘B’ string race in 18.96.
Omar SIMPSON fully made amends for his DSQ in the 100 metres with a 48.05 clocking to win the 400 metres ‘A’ race by over a second. In the ‘B’ race young Freddie OWSLEY ran well for fifth place in 53.34.
Steve MITCHELL completed his double with second place in the ‘A’ 1,500 metres again losing out to Joe Durrant of Cambridge Harriers – Steve’s time was 3:54.56 just half a second behind the winner. Oli MOTT stepped down several distances for a rare track appearance and over 1,500 metres at that. He was pleased to win the ‘B’ string in 4:06.85 and will continue to look for a sub-4 minute clocking – one of several life-time goals apparently.
Club sprinters were well to the fore again as Scott BAJERE and Kwame FORDWOR scored a double in the 200 metres with Scott winning the ‘A’ race in 21.95 and Kwame the ‘B’ race in 22.03 – a time only bettered by Scott in the ‘A’ race.
In the 5,000 metres Shaun ANTELL and Rhys PARK ran well with the latter perhaps a little exuberant early on in the heat. Shaun finished fourth in the ‘A’ race in 15:49.26, whilst Rhys won the ‘B’ race in 16:01.61.
An unusual line-up of John BRIERLY, Steve MITCHELL, Freddie OWSLEY and Dan STUDLEY secured fourth place in 3:34.12 in the 4 x 400 metres relay.
In the field the first event of the day was the hammer with James PRESTON fifth in the ‘A’ string with 30 metres 40 centimetres and Simon BIDDLECOMBE matched him with fifth in the ‘B’ string with a throw of 13 metres 40 centimetres.
The long jump saw good points for the club with Ding YANG third in the ‘A’ string with a jump of 6 metres 47 centimetres and Theo CAMPBELL taking one jump to secure second place in the ‘B’ string with 6 metres and 5 centimetres. Better still was to come in the Pole Vault where Tony HILLIER cleared 4 metres to win on count back, while Luke BAILEY was second in the ‘B’ string with 3 metres 60 centimetres – on the way home both expressed their hope to have jumped higher – perhaps in the next League Match. In the high jump Ding YANG and Luke BAILEY both finished third with Ding clearing 1 metre 80 centimetres and Luke 1 metre 70 centimetres.
New signings father and son Simon and Liam BIDDLECOMBE scored a double in the Discus with Simon taking the ‘A’ event with 45 metres 84 centimetres and Liam the ‘B’ string with 44 metres 74 centimetres. The third double of the day came in the Triple Jump where Paul Weston was on hand to see his athletes take ‘A’ and ‘B’ string wins with Theo CAMPBELL leaping 14 metres exactly and Ding YANG jumping 13 metres 96 centimetres to win the ‘B’ string.
In the Javelin Antony STANLEY-CLARK threw 41 metres 89 centimetres without a run up for fifth place in the ‘A’ event and James PRESTON was sixth in the ‘B’ string with 26 metres 74 centimetres.
The throwers rounded off the day with a brace of runners-up positions in the Shot Putt as James PRESTON putt 12 metres 70 centimetres and Liam BIDDLECOMBE 12 metres 8 centimetres.
