Wesport is the Sports Partnership that promotes all sports in the former Avon Area (Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire). On Wednesday 23rd May 2012 they held their first ever Celebration of Sport Evening at the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel. There were 12 categories of awards – Bristol & West had nominations in four categories and were short-listed in two categories. The second award of the night was for ‘Participation Coach of the Year’ and the club is delighted to report that Chris Elson won this award. Chris and wife Joanne were present and Chris was beaming as he went up to receive his trophy and certificate from British Olympian Kriss Akabusi. Chris’ nomination was for his work with the Whitehall Group on a Monday night and his own group at Coombe Dingle on Tuesdays and Thursdays where he coaches not only Bristol & West athletes but athletes from Westbury Harriers, Bristol University and the University of the West of England. When you add to that his years as Team Manager of the Senior Men’s and Women’s track and field teams and his regular presence at Saturday Parkruns it is not difficult to see why he was the winner of this category.
The fifth award on the night was for ‘Club of the Year’ and it was a proud Club Chairman – Cy Knibb – who received this award in recognition of the club’s growth in 2011, its continued performance at very high levels on the road and at cross-country, promotions in all of the track and field leagues it competed in during 2011 and finally the enormous amount of support the club, its members and its coaches and officials give throughout the county to Wesport, the Avon Network, the Avon Athletic Association, various Education establishments and initiatives and the four local unitary authorities.
