Sutton Park – now clearly established as the home of Road Relay Championships – hosted the Master’s Road Relays on Saturday 12th May 2012. Best result of the day was the Silver Medal won by the Men’s 45 to 55 team who finished in 1 hour 40 minutes and 0 seconds. The team was led off by Jeremy Hogan who clocked 17.10. On the second leg Mike Jacobs pulled back 14 places as he clocked 16.30, Nick Rose passed 2 teams as he ran 17.14 on the third leg. Into the second half of the race David Bedwell ran 17.34 to pull the club up into fifth place, which Alec Woods consolidated with a 15.52 clocking on the penultimate leg. On the anchor leg Philip Parry clocked 15.40 to pass 3 teams and lift the club into the runners-up slot.
In the Women’s 45 to 55 age group the club won a bronze medal in a time of 59 minutes and 5 seconds. A time which left them only 35 seconds behind the winners. It was great to see newcomer to the sport Tracy Allen leading the team out in eleventh place on the first leg in 19 minutes 47 seconds, Sarah Everitt then caught eight places to lift the team to third with a 19.21 clocking leaving Clare Jolliffe to anchor the team home in third place in 19.57.
In the Women’s 35 to 45 Category we were left wondering what might have been had we turned out a full team as Clare Stevinson and Kim Dyer were in the lead after two legs and with athletes of the calibre of Amy Stiles Chalk, Nikki Brookland and Annabel Granger in the club surely it must be possible to field a winning team in the future.
