There were many encouraging performances on Sunday 6th May 2012 at the first National Young Athletes League Meeting held at Yate Outdoor Sports Centre and these included a string of “A” winners with Harry Leeming in the Under-15 1,500 metres, the Men’s Under-17 4 x 400m relay team, Freddie Owsley in the Men’s Under-17 400 metres, Eloise Browne in the Girl’s Under-13 1,200metres, Isabella Parselle in the Girl’s Under-13 150 metres and Harriet Kieran in the Girl’s Under-15 Pole Vault. However, a lack of athlete numbers meant that the club was sixth (and last) in the competition.
The Club was provided with Athlete of the Match T-Shirts to award to the two best performers and these will be presented to Nicola Fortune for her 70 metres Hurdles performance and Lucas Regazzo for his high jump feat.
Lottie McCarthy who was the sole Mendip representative gained two second places and a third – earning 20 event points – and this illustrates the impact that the number of competitors can make on a team score. Filling the gaps is and has always been a key to team success which is a boost to all who take part. So if you coach and have athletes who could and should compete please let’s get them out. If you are a competing athlete then get your friends to come along and support you and if you are already competing consider whether you might be able to double up events to help the team.
The second fixture is at Abingdon on Sunday 20th May 2012 and it would be great for the Club to get a stronger team out to the second fixture.
