National Junior Track & Field League – Summer 2012

10 Apr

The National Junior Athletics League (NJAL) is an inter-club team competition for under-20 athletes, although under-17 athletes can also take part. Five of the clubs within the Avon area (Bristol & West, Mendip, North Somerset, Team Bath, and Yate & District) have joined together to form a composite team called Team Avon.

Last season the team won a place in the Midland Premier Division with an outstanding team performance in the promotion match at Derby.  This means that in the 2012 season athletes will have the opportunity to compete at a high standard against athletes from Birchfield Harriers, Cannock & Staffs, Cardiff AC, Derby AC, Notts AC, Rugby & Northants AC and West Wales.

Athletes must be first claim members of their clubs to be eligible to compete for Team Avon. The four league matches for 2012 are:

29th April – Derby

24th June – Yate

22nd July – Swansea

12th August – Nottingham

plus the National Final on 9th September at Derby (if the team does well enough) and a chance to compete in Europe.

The Team Managers believe that the team has the potential to make the final. This is an ambitious target, but in view of the team’s performances last season they think the team can do it!  There is the athletic talent in Avon to win the division but they must have the commitment of the eligible athletes and the support of those athlete’s coaches and parents to prioritise this league over other events.

TEAM SELECTION: Rachael Fisher from North Somerset (women) & Sandra Woodman from Yate (men) select the team two weeks in advance of the competition so it is vital that you complete an availability form (a copy is available at Downloads – Track and Field Competitions – National Junior Track & Field League ) and return it to the appropriate Team Manager with your current PBs for your preferred events. Their email details are Rachael Fisher – and Sandra Woodman –

The top two ranked athletes are selected to score but there is plenty of opportunity to compete as guests as well.

Team selections will be published by email, and athletes are expected to confirm receipt to the Team Managers.

The first match is at Derby and a coach has been organised for the team (£5 per head; officials travel free). Please make sure you return your form in good time to be considered for team selection.

The Bristol & West Athletic Club link for the National Junior League is Hilary Nash. None of these fixtures clash directly with the British Athletics League or the Midland Track & Field League and club under-20 and under-17 athletes are encouraged to compete in this league whenever possible.
