Avon Sportshall Under-13 Teams Make National Final

Both under-13 County Schools teams retained their South-West Schools Sportshall titles at Torbay on Saurday 3rd March 2012.

The Under-13 Girls team dominated the opposition winning all 4 relays as outstanding baton and excellent team work paid off. Individually Sofie Anderson (Gordano) took the eye with a fantastic Speed Bounce of 89. Adaora Chigbo (BGS) excelled in the High Jump clearing 1 metre 50 centimetres to win. There was an Avon 1,2 in the 4 lap race after Ella Falk (Fairfield) ran a tactical race to wear down Fenella Ford (Colston Girls) to win by 6 tenths of a second. Fenella then joined Alys Withers (Gordano) to take the Paarlauf (8 laps Pairs relay), in which Alys ran two strong legs to battle her way to the front, in a hard won victory. Pippa Reilly (Backwell) took 2 Bronzes individually and a Gold in the Relay whilst Evie Parker Yarrow (Fairfield) won a great bronze in the 6 lap race.

It was a wonder the under-13 boys fielded a team on Saturday after 3 late withdrawals after 10pm on Friday. Things could have been even worse on Saturday after a taxi problem momentarily left the team 2 short. However, with the late addition of Lloyd Kelly (City Academy) the bare team of 12 excelled themselves with wonderful team spirit and effort to win by a meagre 21 points. Lloyd won a Bronze in the 4 lap race and contributed to a Relay win. His school mate Lachlan Mann took Gold in the Relay, Silver in the Shot with a PB 9metres 09 centimetres and a Bronze in the 2 lap. Team Captain Aaron Realizo (St. Bernadette’s) won the vertical jump with a huge 65 centimetres and then ran into 2nd place in the 2 lap.

Aleron Dear (Nailsea) jumped 7metres 06 centimetres in the Triple Jump for Silver and school mate Harvey Flower ran a great 6 lap for Silver just ahead of Reece Traponi (Broadoak). In the end the victories in the 3 Relays proved crucial in defeating Devon with near perfect changeovers and a tactical move in the final relay putting speedy Lachlan Mann on the first leg meant the team handed over at the first change in the lead which they never looked like losing.

It was a really good day. Thanks should be expressed to all the travelling family and friends who made a great noise supporting. The teams together with the under-15 winning teams now look forward to the UK Finals at the NEC on 21st April 2012.
