Former Club steeplechaser, cross-country and road runner Tony WILLIAMS was in the local BBC news recently leading a campaign to have another past member 1964 Olympian Mary BIGNAL RAND receive the ‘Freedom of the Borough of Wells’. Tony was seen crying with joy on TV as he rang Mary (now living in California) to tell her the news.
Mary won Olympic Gold in the long jump plus a silver in the pentathlon and a bronze in the 4 x 100 metres relay in the same Tokyo games in 1964 and broke the World Long Jump Record in the process with a jump of 6 metres 76 centimetres. The distance of her ‘jump’ is marked out on the paving for all to see in Wells City square. Mary is currently to be seen on the cover of the recently issued Telephone Directory.
