After finishing third in the UK Under-23 1,500 Championships in 2010, second in the England Senior 1,500 and fourth in the UK Senior 1,500 metres Championships in 2011 Steve Mitchell finally received his first international call-up today (18th January 2012) when notified of his selection to represent England in an indoor 1,500 metres in Vienna on Tuesday 31st January 2012. Coach Keith Brackstone commented “this acknowledgement is thoroughly well deserved – Steve has put a lot of time and effort into developing himself as a 1,500 metre runner and I hope this will be the first step in a long and successful international journey for him.” Steve – who didn’t start track racing seriously until the end of his first year at Bristol University – has shown significant progress at his new event over the last 4 years. The club wish him well and hope that he might just find a sub 3:42 clocking in Vienna to give him the UK qualifying time for the World Indoor Championships which will be held in Istanbul between 9th and 11th March 2012.
