Rich Peters and Steph Barnes finished first and second respectively in the Nos Galan 5k on New Year’s Eve in a repeat of their finishing positions at Boxing Day’s Clevedon 4 Mile Road Race. Apparently Rich was content to sit in and kick off the last bend whereas Steph forced the pace only to lose out in the run in but still had the satisfaction of running a PB in far from ideal conditions. Rich’s winning time was 14:40 just two seconds in front of Steve Davis of Belgrave with Chris Gowell of Swansea a further two seconds behind in 14:44. Carwyn Jones of Cardiff was fifth in 14:49. Most of Wales’ top distance runners were there with Adam Bitchell fourth in 14:45. Rob Bugden (14:51) finished sixth just edging out club colleague Michael Johnson who was seventh in 14:52. James Thie was eighth in 14:56 and the first nine broke 15 minutes. Dan Studley ran well to finish seventeenth in 15:21 in a field where making the top 20 was a good result.
In the Women’s race Steph’s defeat (16:49) was at the hands of Rachel Bamford (16:44) running for the North. The evergreen Andrea Whitcombe of Swansea was third in 16:59. There were 152 finishers in the elite race.
