The ‘Avon Network’ indoor meet (Pole Vault & Shot) at Bath this past weekend was somewhat a disappointment as none of our exceptional Pole Vault squad competed? I wonder what happened there?
Nevertheless James Preston was there to putt the Shot and keep Bristol & West’s name prominent. He kept up his very high standard with a 13.12 metre throw for third place in the Senior Men’s event.
One serious omission from last week’s report from Cardiff was the outstanding PB in the 3,000 m event by Mike Wilsmore. Mike’s PB improved by 17 seconds as he finished fourth (just behind Steve Mitchell) in a very respectable 8:21.58. The problem of identification causing Mike to be omitted from the report was that he was running in a Plymouth University vest and the original results only showed the numbers of the competitors not names? This was unfortunate for Mike who is now returning to some real form with an aim to make the UK Indoor Championships and collect another 1,500 metre medal at the BUCS Champs. Good luck Mike. (But he will face opposition from Chris Dodd and Andrew Woods fellow club members who will be running for Bristol University at the same event).
One item that can’t be ignored this week is the major feature on Bristol & West in Athletics Weekly. Three double pages with loads of photographs really shows off the Club. One real piece of history is the photograph of Team Manager Tony Clark and the winning National Road Relay team in 1980 (with the exception of Roger Clark who had to rush away to get back on Duty with the RAF). Do you realise that this dominating team still hold the Championship Record even after 31 years?
Please rush out and buy your copy it would be a really good Christmas Present to yourself!
So Christmas is upon us but don’t eat & drink too much as the Indoor Season springs back to life again with the second of the UWIC Grand Prix series at Cardiff on Sunday 8th January 2012 followed the week after by the MCAA Open at the Alexander Stadium. Good luck for 2012 to all Bristol & West Athletes.
