Hat-Trick of Wins at Clevedon Relays

Bristol and West took victories in the Senior Men, Veteran Men and Senior Women’s Road Relays at Clevedon on a blustery morning on Sunday 18 September 2011. Headed only by Team Bath’s Alex Carter as he ran the fastest leg of the day on leg one the senior men’s team were given a great start by Zak Tobias who finished second on that leg. Zak (16.05) handed over to Steve McGuigan (16.38) who soon built a sizable lead that the Senior Men were never to relinquish as Adam Speake (17.01), Luke Grenfell-Shaw (16.33) and Dan Woolford (16.41) made sure of the victory for a very young team.

In the Senior women’s race Hannah Alderson (18.40) gave the ladies a clear lead on the first leg that was held by Kim Dyer (20.32) on the second leg (making a welcome return to racing in club colours). Steph Barnes stretched the lead considerably as she ran 17:51 to record the fastest lap by a lady (another athlete returning to Bristol & West colours – this time after a couple of years studying in the United States). Steph handed over to Emma Bowers (21.36) and the Whitehall Running Leader cruised home to claim a clear victory for the ladies.

The veteran men’s team rounded off a good morning as first Jerry Hogan (17.52) and then Steve Goss (16.59) put the club in a strong position before Dave Bedwell (18.39), Mike Jacobs (17.22) and Phil Parry (16.27) finished the job. Even at his mature years Phil was still second fastest club runner on the day – securing another run in the Midland Relays.

Andy Cooke (17.33), Pat Krause (20.06), Sian Davies (20.47), Clare Joliffe (21.12) and Keith Brackstone (20.28) joined together to form the only mixed team in the race and give each the opportunity of a run out as part of a full team.
