Fourth place overall in the final fixture at Nottingham on Sunday 14th August 2011 was enough to give the club a third Midland Track and Field League win in a row. Early on the portents were not good – despite a herculean effort as ever from Team Manager Chris Elson the team was short of athletes in a number of events, particularly on the women’s side. Furthermore in the first event of the day James Preston had three no throws in the hammer and valuable points went begging. However, the athletes didn’t give up and kept plugging away all afternoon – I won’t go into detail as Mike Strange will be producing a full report.
On the day the team scores were:
1. Birchfield 379.
2. Notts AC 369.
3. Cheltenham 364.5.
4. Bristol 301 (Men169 (3), Women (117), Officials 15).
5. Charnwood 296.5.
6. Rugby/Northants 270.
Overall match points for the series were:
1. Bristol 17.
2= Birchfield, Cheltenham and Notts AC 16.
5. Rugby and Northants 11.
6. Charnwood 9.
Full individual results for each event can be found at Downloads – Track and Field Competitions.
I think the club owes a huge debt to Chris Elson – without his tireless efforts to get athletes to the matches the club would not have come close to achieving the win. It’s now up to Cy Knibb to get everyone out for the National League Promotion match at Abingdon on Saturday 17th September 2011.
