Gold for Hayley – Bronze for Annabel

This week’s great success came in the European Junior Championships in Tallin, Estonia where Annabel GUMMOW won a Bronze Medal in the 5,000m.  Annabel, one of our very talented Cornish athletes, was in a break away group of three runners who built up a substantial lead on the rest of the field after half way and then forged on together to the bell lap.  The group was completed by her nemesis and great British prospect Emelia Gorecka and the winner of the 3,000m Aydemir from Turkey.  With 300m to go the Turkish athlete began her burst for home and gradually created a gap to the British pair with Gorecka then gradually getting away from Annabel.   The small gaps were maintained to the finish line with the times being 16:12.6, 16:13.04 and 16:14.62 so you will see that Annabel was still very close at the end and fully established herself on the world under-20 stage.  Annabel is Coached by Chris Wooldridge who I am sure many of you will remember as the husband of Maureen WOOLDRIDGE one of our top distance runners back in 1990?  Chris began the age of great Cornish female athletes back in the 90s before departing to live in France.  Well thank goodness he has returned to the UK now and is helping Annabel to the stardom that she has earned.

Another top B&W athlete won a Gold Medal over the weekend.  That was Hayley PITMAN who cleared 1.75 in the High Jump at the prestigious McCain Birmingham Games to win by 5 cm from a very strong field of UK athletes.  Under Joy BRAY’S guidance Hayley has now established herself in UK High Jumping and justified those long hours of training that go toward making a Champion.  Well done Hayley.
