Emily DIAMOND was a little rusty going into the European U23 Champs in Ostrava (CZE) last week having only run only one serious 200 metre race this year since her indoor injury. However, despite this, she ran an impressive heat to finish second in 23.96 secs into a rather strong breeze of -1.4 m/s. (It was on Eurosport if you cared to watch). However, despite virtually matching that run in the semi-final (23.98 at +0.7) she was no match for a very impressive field and finished seventh. Really that lack of racing fitness was not a good platform to spring back to world class competition. To top off her slightly disappointing European escapade the British Team came fourth in the 4x100m relay so there was no medal there either?
Caroline POWELL played 3,2,1 with us in the World Masters Championships in Sacramento (USA) over the past week. First Caroline took the Bronze Medal in the 100 metres (14.07 at -1.1) then she progressed to Silver in the 200 metres with 29.23 into a -2.6 wind. So eventually at the end of the week we came to her speciality the 400 metres for which she is of course the World Record holder. Caroline found the competition to be poor in this race which was ironic after running heats, semi-finals and finals in her other races and with only her friend and compatriate Joylyn Saunders-Mullins to threaten her she won by 4 secs in 64.21 seconds. A far cry from her 61 second World Record target. Don’t worry Carol you still won the Gold Medal to make up your 3, 2, 1 trio.
Both new British Youth Record Holder Lucy BRYAN and super Sprinter Leon REID have been selected to compete internationally in the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in the Isle of Man from the 7th till the 13th September 2011. Well done on your well deserved selections.
