Results of the NJL at Cheltenham

11 Jul

Holidays, exhaustion, alleged lack of fitness, injuries etc left very few Bristol & West members supporting the meeting at Cheltenham on Sunday 10 July 2011. This apart from the very disappointing fact that many eligible to compete have still not put themselves forward for selection and participation.   It was great to see Alyssa Small compete at this level for the first time. From the timekeepers stand her 100 metres run was very positive and encouraging.   Luke Jacobs and Zak Tobias also made their Junior League debuts with impressive performances.  In the 3,000 metres a good steady pace saw them off the leader but they eased through to finish together. The 1,500 metres was somewhat tougher for Zak he was leading at the bell with the South East Wales runner in very close attendance and threatening to accelerate past. As much as Emrys Penny tried Zak impressively held him off much to the surprise of my fellow timekeepers. Luke was the third finisher in the 1,500 metres race.   Sam Bedwell had also planned to compete but the onset of a cold ruled him out.   James Taylor competing with an injury that restricted him to throwing events achieved 1st and 2nd “B” placings in the shot putt  10.51m and discus 36.21m     The match result was:

Cheltenham 497

South &  East Wales 479

Team Avon 456

Plymouth & Cornwall 239

The current League position is:

Team Avon                    1579                22

Cheltenham                   1457.5            21

South & East Wales      1315               19

Plymouth & Cornwall    1009.5            16

Considering it is 11 – 9 –  8  – 7 for “A” string and 9 – 7 – 6 – 5  for “B” strings it is clear that with just a few more athletes filling the gaps another win should have been achieved. 17 gaps 6 more than Cheltenham proves that filling team slots is crucial. South & East Wales had 16 gaps.   Individual performances are shown below:

F U17 100m        3A Alyssa Small 13.4
F U17 HJ        3A Alyssa Small 1.30
M U17 1500m 1A Zak Tobias 04:11.6

The fourth fixture is at Yate on 24 July 2011 and the promotion match is at Derby on Sunday 28 August 2011. The promotion match team may only include athletes who have competed in the team during the season. So competing on 24 July 2011 may be essential if you have not done any NJAL meets this season.
