As usual the Club’s young athletes produced a host of fine performances at the recent English Schools’ Championships held on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd July 2011 at Gateshead Stadium. There were no gold medal winners but Hobie Martin won silver in the Intermediate Boys 3,000 metres with a PB of 8.38.06 behind Jonathan Davies of Berkshire who clocked 8.33.49. In the same race Zak Tobias was fifth in 8.56.81 and Luke Jacobs 13th in 9.05.79.
In the Senior Girls 1,500 metres Olivia Sadler added bronze to her silver from the Intermediate girls last year finishing third in 4.30.51 behind Sophie Connor of Hertfordshire (4.28.10) and Hanna Tarver of Mersey side (4.29.21). Olivia’s time was just outside her PB of 4.28.91.
Leon Reid finished third in the Senior Boy’s 100 metres in 10.84 – the same time as the silver medal winner. Kwame Fordwor also featured in the final finishing sixth in 10.93. It must have been disappointing for Avon Schools that with two individuals in the first six in the 100 metres they couldn’t field a 4 x 100 metres team.
Other performances of note were Lily Owsley’s sixth place in the final of the Intermediate Girls’ 800 metres in 2.14.24 (after a 2.12.19 heat) and Miranda Sadler must have been disappointed not to make the final with a 2.13.93 clocking for fourth place in her heat in the same event. Obviously Dave Taylor’s girls are in good form.
In the field Luke Bailey was the sole club athlete finishing sixth in the Pole Vault with a clearance of 4 metres 20 centimetres – a bit below his PB of 4 metres 40 centimetres.
All in all there were some very good performances from the club’s athletes but it would be nice to see more club athletes make the English Schools Championships in 2012 with a stronger representation in the sprints and field events particularly welcome.
