Go for Gold Trial – Tuesday 21st June 2011 – Results and Report

22 Jun

Twenty-one athletes aged between 12 and 18 contested the third and final preliminary ‘Go for Gold’ trial held at Whitehall Athletics Arena on Tuesday 21st June 2011. Bristol & West Athletic Club offered nine different events so that we could assess the ability of the young athletes to throw and jump as well as run. Of the 21 young athletes 8 will be invited to attend future ‘Go for Gold’ sessions and the remaining 13  will be invited back to train with Bristol & West Athletic Club on Wednesday night young athlete sessions if they are not already part of another club.

From year 9 and above many young athletes have already had exposure to a variety of events and have chosen which particular event or events they wish to pursue.  Some of those who trialed on 21st June 2011 are already receiving specialist coaching and the aim of ‘Go for Gold’ will be to augment this coaching where possible.

Yemma Songu (who is already a member of Bristol & West Athletic Club) won the 100 metres in 13.29 and Anicia Skeates won both the girl’s high jump and long jump with 1 metre 40 centimetres and 4 metres 73 centimetres respectively.

In the Boy’s events Sam Boulton and Connor Farr (both of Team Bath and already coached by Ken Holmes) threw both the shot and the discus to show that they already have the technique one would expect of athletes being coached to that standard. Fastest sprinter of the day was Conner Yeats with 11.66 for the 100 metres and he also produced a 5 metres 26 centimetres long jump; Conner would be an asset to any local club. Jack Dyer (Year 9) was not much slower at 11.71 to win the race for his age group (Jack is already a member of Bristol & West Athletic Club). Jakob White ran 11.86 for 100 metres and then ran a solo 53.55 for the 400 metres for year 10 and above (as a member of Yate & District AC Jakob will keep working with his club). Nathan Kudajczk won both the 800 and 1,500 metres in 2 minutes 41.4 seconds and 5 minutes 33 seconds respectively.

Many thanks to Colin Hickey (Long Jump and Hurdles) and Joy Bray (High Jump) who provided coaching on the night to Matt Storm and Anicia Skeates after the trials.

A huge vote of thanks to the dedicated band of volunteers without whose help it would be impossible to stage these events.
