The Club Marks the First Competition at Kip Keino Athletic Stadium with Emphatic Win on Saturday 7th May 2011

The Kip Keino Athletic Stadium at WISE Campus Filton College was officially opened with some exhibition field events and two 3,000 metre races on 2nd November 2010 but competition proper got under way on Saturday 7th May 2011. Bristol & West Athletic Club were finally able to host a league match in their home city after several years (I am sure someone will enlighten me when Whitchurch last hosted such an event). It was clearly worth the wait as the home club kicked off the senior track and field season with a clear win. The team result was:

Bristol & West AC   429
Notts AC            362.5
Cheltenham          361.5
Birchfield          288
Charnwood           242
Rugby & Northampton 176

So a clear team victory by 66.5 points – a real testament to team manager Chris Elson’s powers of persuasion and persistence on the telephone.

Performance of the day by a Bristol & West athlete must surely have been Hayley Pitman’s 1 metre 70 centimetre clearance in the women’s high jump for a league record – and she followed up with a couple of close attempts at 1.73 before finally fouling out, There were an incredible number of individual wins (33 if I have counted them correctly) and if we can only plug one or two areas where we didn’t have a competitor (such as the ‘B’ men’s 400 metre hurdles and mens ‘B’ hammer and the women’s ‘B’ javelin) then we could be even stronger at future matches. As befits a club with our distance pedigree we won every race at 800 metres and above with the exception of the men’s ‘B’ 800 metres where Andrew Dean-Young finished second. This comment is in no way intended to under-play the part played by our sprinters and field eventers – with some great performances from the male sprinters and from field eventers of both sexes. James Preston and Christina Jones and Hayley Green all had particularly busy afternoons and to great effect.

All of the track performances were affected by the strong wind on the home straight but that didn’t stop Rebekah Randell running a PB 9.45.7 in the women’s 3,000 metres. In the field Christina Jones and Hayley Green both threw PBs in the women’s hammer with best throws of 52.23 and 47.32 respectively and Rhys Llewellyn-Eaton threw a 53.70 PB in the men’s javelin.

Chris Elson’s comment about the women’s relays was “There were some real star efforts here from two scratch teams! Brilliant!”

A great start in a year when the club’s number 1 track and field aim is to gain promotion to the National Track and Field leagues but I am sure our competitors won’t take this result lying down and Chris will need at least as strong a team for the trip to Rugby on Saturday 4th June 2011 if the club is to maintain this momentum.

Full results of all races can be found at Downloads – Midland Track and Field League.

There were numerous club photographers around and I hope to upload some action shots as soon as I receive them.

Finally, a very big thank you to a whole array of volunteers (several from outside Bristol & West) who helped the event run smoothly and to time – your efforts were greatly appreciated by the visiting clubs.
