Track and Field Bulletin – 27th April 2011

The Club is now into the Summer Track Season and looking forward to a crucial Midland League fixture on our brand new facility at Stoke Gifford next weekend (Saturday 7th May 2011).  This weekend (Sunday 1st May 2011) sees the launch of the Avon Network U20 team at Yate in the National Junior League and our Students will be competing at a high level over the weekend at Bedford in the BUCS Championships.

Performances to date (apart from the very successful Indoor Season that we have already reported on) have been few but the standard has been top notch.

In last week’s South West League at Braunton our only contribution to the Mendip Team was new signing Misha GAFFNEY.  What a performance it was though – Misha won the Women’s Javelin with a remarkable PB throw of 39.80 which beat her previous best by 3m.  Misha is currently 14th in the UK Rankings and will be a great asset to our team as she also throws a mean Discus into the bargain.

At Loughborough they required the High Hurdlers to race off for places at the BUCS Champs, such is the depth of talent at that University this year.  Needless to say freshman Yannick BUDD was a little nervous in his first real competition for the ‘top’ University but of course Yannick always performs well on the top stage.  YANNICK started with a pb of 15.4 from last year and did not let anyone down finishing with a magnificent 14.88 clocking!  The Club Record of 14.7 set in France in 1980 by Ian WILLOUGHBY is now seriously under threat.  With an improvement of .52 of a second in his first race I predict we will have a new Hurdles Club Record by June at the latest. (No pressure Yannick).

In America David BISHOP shot up to 6th on this year’s UK Rankings with a super fast 1500m in 3:41.12 (this is equivalent to a 3:58.3 Mile).  David is also closing in on the Club Record of Olympian Nick ROSE who did 3:40.41 in 1980?  David really has set some great times in the USA this year and we hope he will be back in the UK soon to bulk up our track teams.

Steph BARNES also improved her 2011 1500m time with a 4:38.70 clocking in Auburn on the 14th April to consolidate her place in the UK Top 40 rankings and Emma REED improved her 3k Steeplechase time to 11:05.00 on 7th April.

We learned this week that our Club Photographer Dave ELLANS has been poorly recently and is still receiving treatment.  Dave keeps abreast of Club matters by following the web site so I know everyone will wish Dave well for the future.
