In horse racing parlence Steve Francis would definitely be called a course and distance specialist and he added to his tally of Bridge Inn wins as the University of Bristol and Bristol & West Athletic Club runner stode home well clear in the first of the 2011 Bridge Inn Summer Series of races sponsored by Easy Runner in 15.26. Whilst Steve might have had an easy win there was a real battle for the runners up position before Robert Farley of Bitton Road Runners edged out Luke Grenfell-Shaw of Bristol & West Athletic Club by one second (16.05 to 16.06). Luke, in turn, secured bragging rights in Dave Bedwell’s training group as he edged out Luke Jacobs (16.07) by one second for third position. Luke, in fourth place, had to be content with first under-17 and another victory over his Dad, Mike, who had the satisfaction of being first vet home in eighth place (coincidentally wearing number 8) in 16.50. As a V45 Mike edged out Jacob Hayes of Bitton Road Runners who was the first V40 in 17.00. First V50 was Mark Scrutton in 17th place in 17.33 showing good form.
In the Ladies race Laura Parsonage of Bath won a race long battle with Debbie Marsden in 17.03 as the Westbury runner took 19 seconds off her 5k road PB with 17.08. Third lady (and first L35) was Jane Wassell of Stroud & District AC in 18.27.
With the Easter holidays upon us and the Universities away 80 athletes completed the event. Full results can be found by following the link to Results – Bridge Inn 5k.
