Club Young Athletes Perform Well in English Schools Cross-Country on 19th March 2011

Young athletes from the club were among the thousands who made their way to Woollaton Park, Nottingham for the high-light of the schools winter calendar on Saturday 19th March 2011. Between them they represented three counties with Hobie Martin and Oscar Holdsworth making the long journey from Cornwall while Rhys and Annasley Park were there representing Hereford and Worcester. The usual suspects from Dave Taylor’s and Dave Bedwell’s groups were there representing Avon Schools.

In the Junior Boys Oscar Holdsworth finished 115th in 15.07 and to give readers an idea of how competitive these races are there were 19 finishers in a four second band around Oscar.

In the Intermediate boys Hobie Martin finished fifth in 17.54, Zak Tobias twelfth in 18.22 and Luke Jacobs 33rd in 18.52.Good runs from Hobie and Zak but I am sure Luke will be disappointed with his run compared with other performances this winter. There were 320 finishers.

In the Senior Boys Rhys Park would also have been disappointed to finish 49th out of 313 – he was another whose winter form would have suggested a higher placing.

As with the Boys, the Intermediate Girls race had the strongest club representation from the club with Annasley Park the first club finisher in 43rd place in 13.55. Just behind her Victoria Kenney finished 48th in 13.58. Miranda Sadler just made the top 100 in 99th place in 14.27 while Lily Owsley was only 3 seconds but 9 places behind as she finished 108th in 14.30. The race was won by Jessica Judd (Essex) in 12.17 who finished well clear of runner-up Alice Wright (Hereford & Worcester) in 12.51.

Finally in the Senior Girls race Olivia Sadler finished seventh in 15.08 in a race won for West Yorkshire by England under-20 international Jenny Walsh in 14.37. Billie Williams was 181st in 17.50 in a field of 290 finishers.

All-in-all a good day for the club and I am sure that the coaches involved with those athletes will be pleased with their performances.
