Claire Hallissey made her marathon debut on Sunday 7th November 2010 in New York on the day Haile Gebrselassie announced his retirement from Marathon running. Claire successfully completed the race in eighteenth place in 2 hours 36 minutes and 13 seconds – her pre-race prediction was between 2 hours 35 minutes and 2 hours 40 minutes and hopefully nearer to the former – so her pre-race prediction was very accurate. The race was won by Edna Kiplagat of Kenya in 2:28:20 with Shalane Flanagan of the USA runner-up in 2:28:40. In third place was World Half-Marathon Champion Mary Keitany of Kenya in 2:29.01. Mara Yamauchi – the current UK number 1 – was thirteenth in 2:31:38. Claire’s time was good enough for third place on the 2010 UK rankings and shows that a place on the 2012 UK Olympic Team is now a realistic target.
