The second running of the popular Bridge Inn 5k Winter Series 2010 on Tuesday 26th October 2010 saw runners from the University of Bristol, who are also club members of Bristol & West, take top honours. Chris Dodd – better known as an 800/1,500 metre specialist – ran the race as part of a programme to improve his endurance base this winter and showed that the additional mileage is already showing benefits as he won in 15:46. Close behind University and Club Colleague Steve Francis – a Bridge Inn stalwart – was delighted to dip under 16 minutes for the first time as he finished runner-up in a 15:55 PB. Chasing them both all the way was one of Dave Bedwell’s group also using the event as a hard tempo run – Zak Tobias. Zak came tantalisingly close to the 16 minute barrier clocking 16:01 also for a PB.
In the women’s race it was again university runners to the fore as Bristol’s Imogen Ainsworth finished twelfth overall in 17:03 to take 10 seconds off her 5k road PB. Just to show that Bristol isn’t the only University in the city with endurance athletes, Hannah Alderson from Bristol & West, who is now a student at the University of the West of England, improved her 5k road PB to 17:23 in the runners-up position after a race long battle with Westbury Harrier’s Debbie Marsden. Debbie also ran a PB (17:27)and is clearly showing the benefits of training with Chris Elson’s group. 138 runners completed the event.
