Claire Hallissey finished second in the San Diego Half-Marathon in California on Sunday 15 August 2010 in a time of 72:22 after passing 10k in 33:15. The race was won by Ethiopian Belainesh Gebre in 70:28: a time 9 seconds faster than the women’s course record that had stood since 2001. Belainesh is now permanently based in Flagstaff, Arizona. Claire’s time is the fourth fastest half-marathon by a British woman in 2010 and ranks her seventh on the San Diego all time list (30 seconds quicker than former Australian Marathon star Lisa Ondieki (formerly Martin) (Two Commonwealth Golds and an Olympic silver!)). Claire finished well clear of Japanese duo Yuri Takamizawa and Shino Sato who were third and fourth in 73:22 and 74:52 respectively. Just three weeks before the Bristol Half-Marathon this shows that Claire is in fine shape to return and defend her UK half-marathon title. Hopefully if Claire can stay injury free a good run in the World Half-Marathon in China and a great marathon debut in New York in November will follow.
