Mike Down Reports on Club Successes at Manchester

Tom Russell scored the biggest victory of his track career when he broke 14 minutes for the first time to win the top 5000m race in the BMC Grand Prix at Manchester.Unleashing a scorching 59 second last lap he outsprinted international rivals Bruce Raeside and Ryan Macleod to win the race going away in a time some ten seconds faster than his previous best of 13:51.81.
There were also two cracking performances from our top 1500m runners Rich Peters and Steve Mitchell. Rich followed up his 800m victory the previous Tuesday in the BMC South West event by slashing three seconds off his previous best to win the C race convincingly in 3:45.53, whil Steve ran aggressively in the B race and ended up a close-up 6th in a season’s best of 3:46.67.
Though not pacing her race as well as she might have Kate Goodhead still broke 17 minutes easily in the women’s 5000m.
