This weekends County Championships were largely run in cold, wet conditions and all events seem to have been adversely affected. Saturday was not a nice day to compete and this impeded the possibility of star performances. My pride of place goes to Alex FIELDS who not only posted a 3.2 second improvement in his 400m Hurdles, coming down now to 60.46 but he also equalled his 400m sb with another 51.0 clocking. The other performances that impressed me were in the women’s U17 800m where Lily OWSLEY clocked 2:15.15 (very close to her pb and remember conditions were abysmal) and Olivia SADLER followed closely in 2:17.03 with the quickly improving Billie WILLIAMS in 3rd place. For Olivia it was an interesting weekend as she followed with a 41:21 clocking on the road (Sunday) in the Bristol 10k (remember Olivia is an U17).
Martin FLOOK emerged from the shadow of injury to win the 800m & 1500m without really extending himself at all, so welcome back Martin. Although there were not many hurdlers on show at Yate B&W did win the U20 men’s and women’s races as well as the U17 80mH. Times were not good overall but it was great to see the multi talented Zoe LAING back in competition. B&W dominated the Pole Vault competitions with Tony HILLIER, Luke BAILEY & Lucy BRYAN winning with quite extra ordinary heights in the conditions but what about young Bella HATCH who went on to exceed her pb by 20cm with a 2.70 vault to win the U15 event. Welcome back to Hayley PITMAN in the High Jump and well done to our excellent throwers Hayley GREEN, Christina JONES and Nicola BREAKS who sowed up the medals there. For the Club probably the most important return was that of multi-talented Ding Yang who won the Long Jump with a leap of 6.59m. James PRESTON dominated the U20 throws on the Men’s side and did a season’s best in the Hammer with 39.01. Jonathan Clayton in the U17 throws achieved a pb of 32.42 in the Hammer as well. Theo CAMPBELL and newcomer Kwame FORDWOR dominated the U20 & U17 men’s sprints but I am sure were bitterly disappointed with their times although of course Theo was far faster than those in the senior men’s race!
In other County’s we saw good wins for the Speake twins and Young brothers in Somerset and wins for Annabel GUMMOW & Hobie Martin in Cornwall.
