Bristol & West with Mendip fielded a very depleted team and the other competing clubs suffered as well at Camarthen yesterday. A bank holiday weekend with other fixture clashes and priorities decimated the team.
There is a new scoring system this year to determine the team position. The final position come the end of July is simply the total of the points awarded to athletes according to the finishing position in their events over the four meetings The challenge is to turn the poor start into a successful outcome.
The athletes who braved the cool and very breezy conditions all contributed well with a number of winning performances. It could have been better as Martin Elena had the misfortune to fall and not finish in the 80m hurdles and Jason Harkness was disqualified in that race. Jonathan Clayton, a throwing expert, had been persuaded to compete in the MU17 4 x 100m relay but was disappointed because after a tough 400m Dan Robinson was unable to make up the quartet.
The match result was:
Bristol & West with Mendip 176
