Dark Horses Face Mammoth Task

NATIONAL ROAD RELAYS

Hopes are high that we shall be fielding our strongest ever B&W team for the men’s 12 stage. Although Tim Wallis has had to pull out due to an ankle strain, which has spoilt our best laid plans for the long stages, there have been no other withdrawals so far to the team selected as follows:
LONG LEGS (probable running order): JON WILLS (1), PHIL WYLIE (3), TOM LOWE (5), TOM RUSSELL (7), TOM MERSON (9), ROBBIE BUGDEN (11).
SHORT LEGS (possible running order): ROB WHALLEY (2), RICH PETERS (4), STEVE MITCHELL or HARRY WEBB (6), DAN WOOLFORD (8), MIKE WILSMORE (10), HARRY WEBB or STEVE MITCHELL (12).

It is still possible that TOM LOWE may do one of the short legs, with PHIL PARRY and DAVE GREEN reserves for the long legs and SEAN HAZELL for the short.

The target will be a place in the top six provided the team runs as selected, but this will not be easy, with the holders NEWHAM & ESSEX hot favourites to retain their title and their predecessors LEEDS CITY, who were runaway winners of the Northern championship, also fancied for one of the medal positions. Add to those our Midland conquerors TIPTON and COVENTRY GODIVA, as well as old rivals NOTTS, plus a host of top Southern clubs, notably National cross-country champions ALDERSHOT, National cross relay champions BEDFORD and former multi-winners BELGRAVE, and one can comprehend the mammoth task we face even to make the top six.
In our favour is that we will start very much as dark horses as the clubs mentioned will not have considered our chances, so with the pressure off let’s just go for it!
It is impossible at this stage to rate the chances of our women as the team is still to be completed due to the loss of REBEKAH RANDELL with acute achilles tendinitis and some doubt over the eligibility of recent signing HANNAH ALDERSON. When I wrote this Keith was still trying to fill up the vacant spaces, with CLAIRE HALLISSEY, IMOGEN AINSWORTH and ELLIE WIMSHURST the only three runners confirmed. Having said that our women’s teams always seem to exceed our expectations!
