Performances Of The Week

18 Dec

1 REBEKAH RANDELL – Rebekah ran a real “Christmas Cracker” at Weston last Sunday, making light of the taxing underfoot conditions to finish 7th overall in a field of nearly 1500 runners and only just over a minute behind the winner Clevedon’s Billy Shepherd in an impressive time for the 10K distance of 35:20. Such was her superiority that her nearest rival finished over three minutes in arrears. In this form she is going to be a force to reckon with in all the big races after Christmas.

2 JENNY JAGGER – Jenny made a promising debut for the club by taking a creditable third place in the prestigious Hogs Back road race at Guildford in Surrey. She underlined her previous endurance background by covering the tough 8 mile course in under 50 minutes (49:11). This is only just over 6min mile pace, and now that she is doing more faster pace work she looks set to become a valued member of our first team squad.

3 SUZIE RICHARDS – Suzie may have been conspicuous by her absence so far this winter, but she started working in London this autumn and has not been letting the grass grow under her feet , as if she ever would! She has been running with our veteran rivals Herne Hill and has been turning out for them in the Surrey League. Her latest effort last Saturday was an encouraging 9th place only 14 seconds behind Aldershot international Vicky Gill. Keep it up Suzie and we shall see you no doubt over the Christmas period.

1 ELLIE WIMSHURST – Who else? What a week she has had! If you had told her at the beginning of the season as she set out on her U20 career that she was going to make the GB team for the European X-C championships, she would probably have laughed at you with disdain, but if you had added that she would be the third British finisher and a vital cog in us taking the silver medals in the team race, she would probably have had a nervous breakdown at the prospect! But having the mettle to take your chances when they are there is the mark of a championship performer and young Ellie certainly showed that last Sunday in Dublin. I am actually writing this on Ellie’s 18th birthday, while she is no doubt out celebrating. But congratulations from all at the club. She could surely have hardly given yourself a more rewarding birthday present!

2 KATIE KNOWLES – Katie may have been overshadowed by her younger clubmate on the day, but she too proved worthy of her late inclusion in the team by finishing 5th of the six British runners in 29th place only just over 10 secs away from a top 20 position. She too came away with a silver medal as all six members of the team receive them, so completing a memorable day for the club. We are proud of you both.

3 EMILY MERRICK – Emily has been off the radar recently locally, but she has not been idling, following up a creditable 13th place in the last Midland League race with 8th and second U20 among an unusually strong field in last Saturday’s Gloucestershire League event at Tewkesbury.

1 JERRY HOGAN – Jerry made light of his 50 years to set an indoor pb of 10:01.53 in the opening UWIC Grand Prix at Cardiff and will now be targetting to get under the ten minute barrier next time he competes over the distance.

2 JON GOODLAND – Jonathan joined Rebekah in the Christmas Cracker, and though unsurprisingly not able to match strides with our flying blonde superstar he still ran quick enough for a “fairy” – his disguise – to earn the V50 title in a time only just outside 38mins (38:07), which is agaain very respectable considering the nature of the terrain.

PS (1) A reminder that because of the clash with the Avon Schools championships we have decided to pick no Young Athletes teams to represent Avon in the South West Champs at Bicton Park on January 10. Only senior and U20 teams will be selected, so any youngsters wanting to run must enter individually. Entries close this wekend and can be made via the Midland Athletics website.

(2) The annual Downs Fitness Handicap, which was scheduled for this Sunday, has had to be postponed due to the clash with Jon and Charley’s wedding this weekend. They declared themselves unavailable!! All being well it will be rearranged for Sunday,January 3 when it should also prove as a useful warm-up for the following wekend’s South West and Avon Schools champs.
