Bristol & West AC are sad to announce the death of Sid Upsher at the age of 96. Sid’s elder son Tony was a young athlete in our Club and as a result Sid joined himself in October 1955. He went on the Committee almost immediately and was Chairman of Bristol AC from 1957 till 1964. Jon Gingell remembers him as one of the ‘fab five’ who ran the Club’s affairs at the time – the others being Fred Hill, Monty Mann, Ron Rowles and George Tucker.
Sid’s continuing and forward-looking interest in our Club was shown when, aged 90, he attended our AGM on 26th March 2004. He came specially to speak in favour of the expansion of the name of our Club from Bristol AC to Bristol & West AC. The AGM minutes record that, ‘Sid Upsher spoke first about amalgamation of clubs, which was his dream for Bristol. Westbury Harriers and South Bristol Harriers had both been splinter groups. Only with one club will we be able to participate at the highest level. Opportunities had been missed in the past, notably for a large stadium for all major sports in Bristol.’
B&WAC are very appreciative of the part Sid played in our Club and our heartfelt sympathy is extended to his family.
Sid’s funeral is at Canford Cemetery, Westbury-on-Trym at 1pm Thursday 29 October.
