At Sundays ERRA National Young Athletes Road Relays, Sutton Park.
The first leg started in near disaster as runners tumbled in front of Zak Tobias at the crowded start of the U15 boys race. Zak narrowly avoided mishap and was soon challenging the leaders in a fast paced race under ideal conditions. He remained in contention with 12m45s at the changeover in 4th place, just 6seconds behind the leading team from Liverpool.
Given his first chance for the A team, Kieran Young showed that brother Nathan was not the only star runner in the family by slicing almost a minute from his previous best for the course with 13m16s and gaining a place for 3rd overall. Furthermore all his recent training had been with a broken arm, and the cast had only been removed 2 days previously.
Less than a minute covered the medal positions as recent recruit Luke Jacobs started making inroads to the deficit. Superb pace judgement enabled him to overhaul the Wirral athlete and stay ahead of the top ranked track athlete from Coventry with 4th best time overall of 12m39s for a well deserved silver medal.
The Bristol & West team were just 28s behind the winning Shaftesbury Barnet squad with the prospect of further close encounters over the cross-country season.
