With expectation low, after the struggle to raise a complete team of ten, it was a very welcome surprise that we took third place in the mixed category with a team that included six women (where only three are required for mixed team status). We were 11th overall which is no mean feat since it wasn’t until Wednesday that we were able to confirm a complete team.
Noteable performances came from Sian Davies, 2nd Woman on stage 3 (10th overall), Lisa Newing, 1st Woman on stage 6 (16th overall) and Nicky Bromhall, 2nd Woman on stage 9 (13th overall).
Mike Roberts win on stage 8 really helped the team score along but the performance of the day has to go to Helen Fines who won stage 7 outright, beating all the men – a feat never before achieved on the Cotswold Relay where a woman has won a stage (and there were a few grumpy men who didn’t take defeat well).
Other results; Dave Austin, 18th on stage 1, Mark Dickinson, 41st Stage 2 (one of the toughest legs), Holly Williamson, 3rd Woman on stage 4 (27th overall), Pete Skinner, 31st stage 5 and Julia Belyavin who went over on her ankle in the first mile but carried on for the team, while in some pain to finish 5th Woman (24th overall).
A very big thank you to all those who ran. And big thanks to Team Bath who run the event which always goes off like clock work.
Dave (team captain)
