The Avon teams all excelled at the South West Regional Championships held at Torbay last Saturday. An incredible meeting in which Avon became the first team ever in the South West to win all age groups U13 Girls, U13 Boys, U15 Girls and U15 Boys. Birmingham repeated the feat at the West Midland Championships on Sunday.
The under 15 boys and girls teams include B&W members Chad Edwards, Lucy Bryan and Valentina Santo-Fullerton who were 8th,11th and 6th respectively in the All Rounder Competition. They were vital members of 4 x 2 lap relay teams. Chad was 1st equal in the standing long jump 2.44m and 2nd in the 2 lap race with a time of 20.8 secs. Lucy was 2nd in the vertical jump 55cms and Valentina 3rd equal in the vertical jump 54cms and 4th in the speed bounce 80 bounces in 30 seconds.
The four teams have qualified in style for the United Kingdom UK Finals at the LG Arena, The NEC, Birmingam on Sunday 22 March 2009.
The under 15 teams are selected and team managed by Hilary Nash and this was his 15th year. In the past the U15 boys qualified in 2001 3rd, 2004 5th and 2007 11th. The girls qualified in 2006 11th.
The under 13s are team managed by Dave Turner and Sue Jones. The boys have qualified ten times over the last fifteen years winning twice and 2nd or 3rd on at least four occasions. The girls have qualified six times over that period and it may be that this year’s team is the strongest yet. The U13 boy’s team also compares well with the best teams from previous years.
There were several earlier years of Regional events and National finals when Avon only had U13 teams. The boys did win in 1994 to add to the excellent record of achievement at National Finals noted above.
