BRISTOL AND WEST’S Helen Fines finished individual silver medallist in the English Fell Running Championships. After leading the Championships since June, a bad run in the final race lost the title. However, an unbeaten run of 4 races of the Welsh Open Championships has secured the individual gold, in addition to team wins in the British and English Championships for 2nd claim Calder Valley Fell Runners.
Fell running is a true test of endurance-based athleticism, requiring speed, strength, stamina, technical ability, nerve and mental toughness over distances of 3 to 25 miles and ascents of 1000 feet to 9000 feet. It is to be included as a new event in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and is expected to be a demonstration event in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
