Details of the Young athletes prize winners at the Bristol and West AC presentation evening …


NATIONAL champion Ding Yang was among the prize winners at the Bristol and West Athletic Club’s Young Athletes’ presentation night. The AAA Under 15s long jump champion, who missed the English Schools’ due to a school trip, was named field event athlete of the year at the awards night held at Bristol West Indians Cricket Club.

But such was the high standard in the Under 15s age group that 14-year-old Yang had to share the award with James Preston. The 15-0year-old from Keynsham had an outstanding season throwing the shot and discus, finishing fourth in both the English Schools’ and AAA Under 15s shot events.

The Under 15s track prize went to talented all-rounder Lewis Hield.
Club officials also decided that the Under 17 men’s track award should be shared between Matt Berwick and Jamie Lukins.

The Under 17s award went to pole vaulted Tony Hillier, who stared the season slowly but ended it with a flourish with a personal best in the inaugural UK School Games, in Scotland.

Lucy Taylor’s consistent performances and steady improvement were rewarded with the under 17 women’s track award while Christina Jones, a stalwart of the field events in the Young Athletes League and the Midland Women’s League matches, was a popular winner of the field award though unfortunately wasn’t able to pick up her award on the night.

The other age group winners included Yannick Budd, Rosie Furniss-Brown, Finian Bedwell, Hannah Cockram, Sam Bedwell, Grady Wright, Sophie Coghlan, Daisy Da Silva, Kathryn Newman and Rachel Pitman.
In addition nine Bristol and West youngsters won 13 athlete of the match awards given in each of the National Young Athletes’ League and Avon League matches, receiving special T-shirts.

The winners were James Preston (Under 15s shot and discus), Ding Yang (Under 15s long and triple jumps), Lewis Hield (Under 15s 200m), Cameron Walker-Shepherd (Under 15s pole vault), Grady Wright (Under 13s high and long jumps), Tony Hillier (Under 17s pole vault), Daisy Da Silva (Under 13s high and long jumps), Christina Jones (Under 17s hammer) and Naomi Speake (Under 13s 1200m).
