Athletics Round Up

Kate Reed helps GB to the European Cross Country Championship Team Silver medal. Read more about it and all the news from the local area courtesy of the Bristol Evening Post and Saturday Green Un.

KATE Reed is back at her Clevedon home today proudly clutching her first senior international medal.
The 23-year-old Bristol and West AC runner ran an excellent race to help the Great Britain team finish second to Russia at the European Cross Country Championships, in Holland.
Showing good pace judgement and running conservatively Reed started steadily and then powered her way through the field to finish 16th overall and third scorer in the four-woman team.
With defending champion Hayley Yelling sixth, Liz Yelling eighth and final scorer Nicola Harvey 24th the GB squad’s total of 54 points left them just two behind the powerful Russians.
And that performance more than vindicated the selectors’ decision to pick Reed despite her failure to finish the trials race due to jet-lag following racing commitments in Japan.
“I had the worst start I have ever had and I reckon I was back in 50th at the end of the finishing straight,” said Reed.
“But I didn’t panic. The ditches were absolutely horrible but I didn’t mind the wooden bridge.
“ I kept working my way through and eventually saw three French runners in front of me. I knew I was third scorer and persuaded myself I had to pass them to get us a team medal.
“I wanted a medal so much and I knew I had to be in the top 20.”
Liz Yelling also paid tribute to Reed’s run and said it was good to see a new generation of senior runners emerging.
“It’s nice for the youngsters like Kate to get medals at the Europeans because it gives them a taste of the future,” said Yelling.
“When we old birds fall off the other end, we need to have successors coming through!”
* Former winner Paul Wilson regained his Wyvern Christmas crown ahead of almost 1,200 runners at Weston-super-Mare.
Having taken a break from the sport Wilson is now enjoying his running again.
“I have been back running for five months and decided I needed some races,” said Wilson, who lives in Portishead and competes for Bristol and West AC and last won the race in 2003.
“I enjoyed today’s race but I knew I couldn’t relax as I could hear the other guy behind me (Phil Parry) the whole way.”
Wilson eventually finished nine seconds clear of Parry with Vito Graffagnino a distant third.
While Parry had to settle for the runner-up spot his partner Sian Monahan made no mistake in winning the women’s race, finishing over two minutes clear of Bitton’s Lynette Porter.
Race director Phil Williams was delighted with the turn-out for an event that was voted the ‘Most Festive10k’ in Britain by respected magazine Runners’ World.

* Nick Page led Clevedon AC’s senior men to victory in the third Gloucestershire cross country league race at Leamington Spa.
Page had his best run of the winter to finish third and with Nick Hides, Kit Stokes, Steve Hollier and Jason Williams all making the top twenty and Clive Richards completing the scoring in 31st, Clevedon beat the host club by twenty points.
In the young athletes’ races Westbury Harriers’ Damien Holcombe finished runner-up in the Under 17 men’s event while fifth-placed Robert Galt led the club to victory in the Under 15s with Matt Parker and Greg Halliwell in support.
William Massey and Brett Halliwell finished second and third in the Under 13s race, James Wilson was an impressive winner of the under 11s event and Victoria Budd, running for Tockington Manor School, was second in the under 13 girls’ race.
* The next Street 5k road race is held tomorrow night with the Weston Prom 5 on Thursday. Both races take entries on the night.
